23 Mobile Things - Thing 8 - Social Media Management Tools

For the eight Thing I download HootSuite to my Moto X phone. I thought it might be neat because while I have a couple of Twitter accounts and LinkedIn (and Google+, though that’s not an active part of HootSuite yet), I pretty exclusively look at Facebook, because that’s where all my family and friends are, and where the most activity is. I could probably stand to do a little more keeping up professionally with LinkedIn and a Twitter account I made for a class last semester, so I decided to add them to this HootSuite account with my Facebook.

Instead of merging all updates into one feed like I thought it would, it has all three apps each in it’s own section, with their main menu options (Twitter has the Home Feed and 5 other options, Facebook the News Feed and two other options, and LinkedIn Network Updates and one other option). All three have “Scheduled Messages” as an option. Once you’ve selected one and are in that account, you can swipe back and forth to change between options.

This looks like it would be super handy if you post a lot (I don’t) and want to schedule posts for each account, or share the same post across several accounts, which I can see being useful personally and professionally. You could have Twitter accounts for each branch of a library system, and get a message out across all of them at once, or you may want to advertise programming across several platforms at once (like my school’s Facebook and Twitter accounts).

Personally, I’m used to browsing Facebook on my phone through the browser (rather than the app), and HootSuite makes “liking” posts have an extra step. I don’t know if I will keep HootSuite or not. I’ll see how I like going into summer.
