23 Mobile things - Thing 3 - Utilities

For Thing 3 - Utilities, I chose to try StandApp (and, seriously, just while writing this got the joke) while doing long stretches of homework, since I'm usually up and about enough at work. I downloaded it to my Moto X phone, and as the “getting started with StandApp” page on the 23 Mobile Things website mentioned, I was presented with some in-your-face dire factoids about how bad sitting for long stretches is - which I already knew, and was part of why I chose this app. I sit way too much.

I mostly chose hour-increments, and was usually startled by the alarm. A very short video would then play, demonstrating a random stretching technique, with a five-minute timer and instructions to stay standing the whole time. I usually did the exercise, though a couple of times I accidentally skipped it and returned to the next hour timer when I thought I would be skipping to a different exercise. I would then frequently lean over my computer while standing to keep working through the five minute break, or I would wander off for fifteen or so minutes to get food or whatever and have to restart the hour timer.

It worked alright overall, though it kept opening itself when I was trying to do other things on my phone, which was pretty annoying. I don’t know that I’ll really use it again much - my phone has a regular timer function already. Professionally, this could be useful if I did spend too much time sitting at work, or perhaps could be used in classrooms to break up work times, but I think there might be better tools or methods for these environments. Especially since I’m not really supposed to be using my phone at work.
