I’ve heard a lot about Snapchat lately, and at least a few teenagers and young adults I know are using the app, so I chose to try it out for the tenth Thing. I friended one of my sisters who also recently started using it, took a selfie, captioned it, doodled on it with my finger in various colors, and sent it to her. I saved it on my own phone, because there’s this essential timer function where the recipient can only see the image for up to 10 seconds (you choose the limit) before it disappears (though they can take a screen capture it). She sent me one back, but I had trouble keeping it in view long enough to take a screen capture of it with my phone’s complicated power-button & down-volume button procedure. It seems like it could be a fun, simple way to share pictures and express some creativity in my personal life, if I can find others to Snapchat with (not that I regular chat much).
Professionally, maybe this could be used for quick reference questions (take pic of book, caption or doodle notes on it, send to reference librarian who hopefully has a company phone/tablet for the purpose and an easy screen capture procedure), sending out teasers to programming/events, noting damage to books or issues in the library - probably a lot of things that could be accomplished with other image sharing/editing applications, or just texting photos with notes to relevant parties (thought the amount of people you can reach at once with Snapchat is probably greater and easier to do than with regular texting).
